On May 16, 2016, 100 Resilient Cities announced their partnership with Street Plans for the provision of “Tactical Resilience” workshops to the member cities of 100RC. Tactical Resilience is an adaptation of Tactical Urbanism, with demonstration projects developed around a range of resilience priorities. Demonstrations will include the programming of unused space, water management tecniques, and urban mobility improvements.

Street Plans joined a prestigious group of 100RC partners that have committed to helping cities around the world become more resilient to the shocks and stresses that are an increasingly large aspect of urban life. The workshops will include residents, local businesses, and community leaders to gain support from the public and key decision-makers to spur further investment in testing, refining, and then scaling demonstration projects to permanently advance city resilience.

The first of the three of these workshops, called “Retain your
Rain”, was held on June 4, 2016 in Norfolk, VA in partnership
with ioby, the City of Norfolk, and AMEC Foster Wheeler.
In attendance were 50 neighborhood leaders from the Neon
District, and the Ghent and Chesterfield neighborhoods of
Norfolk. The workshop demonstrated how property owners,
both business and residential, can help alleviate rainwater
flooding in the city by building small flood mitigation projects
to hold water on their property, thereby slowing down rain
runoff and preventing fl ooding. Th e participants and
workshop leaders installed four rain barrels, one rain garden,
and depaved a sidewalk for landscaping/water retention.
